    Word Problems


    Word Problems are mathematical problems that are delivered in ordinary words, not mathematical symbols. Part of the problem with dealing with word problems that that they first need to be translated into mathematical equations, and then the equations need to be solved.  As the majority of word problems in algebra can be rewritten as equations, which could be solved, the following steps are recommended:
    1. Read Carefully
    2. Define A Variable (What You Are Trying to Solve)
    3. Make A Plan
    4. Write An Equation
    5. Solve
    When working with math problems, it is important to translate various words and phrases into mathematical equations.  Various examples are provided below:
    • Addition
      • "in addition to"
      • "plus"
      • "added to"
      • "more than"
      • "and"
    • Subtraction
      • "less than"
      • "take away"
    • Multiplication
      • "times"
      • "by"
      • "per"
    • Division
      • "divided by"
      • "per"
    • Equal
      • "is equal to"
      • "is equivalent"
      • "their values are equal to each other"
