When adding numbers, each of the numbers being added together are referred to as addends while the result is called the sum.

When adding numbers representing amounts of money, each amount should be written as a dollar amount with two places to the right of each decimal point. Thereafter, the entries should be aligned at the decimal points and added with the dollar signs included:
