Subtraction
When subtracting numbers, the subtrahend is subtracted from the minuend with the result referrred to as the difference. As an example:
32 (minuend)
−11 (subtrahend)
21 (difference)
Similar to addition of money, subtraction also requires conversion of all amounts to dollars before aligning the decimals in order to perform the subtraction:
Example:
$3.86 − 32¢ = ?
Solution:
Writing 32¢ as $0.32, it follows that:
$3.86
−$0.32
$3.54
