Addition of Mixed Numbers
Mixed numbers may be added using the following steps:
- If mixed numbers do not already contain a common denominator, modify respective fractional portions to achieve a common denominator
- Add whole number and fractional portions together respectively
- If an improper fraction exists in result, convert it to a proper fraction and modify the whole number portion accordingly
For large whole numbers, it is often preferable to added mixed numbers in vertical format.
